- O.E. trymman "strengthen, make ready," from trum "strong, stable," from P.Gmc. *trumaz. Original sense is preserved in nautical phrase in fighting trim. Meaning "make neat by cutting" is first recorded 1530; that of "decorate, adorn" is from 1547. The adj. sense of "in good condition, neat, fit" is from 1503. Trimmer "one who changes opinions, actions, etc. to suit circumstances" is first recorded 1682, from nautical sense of "distribute the load of a ship so she floats on an even keel" (1580), hence, "to adjust the balance of sails or yards with reference to the wind's direction" (1624). Trimmings "adornments, accessories, etc." is from 1612.
